So How Does It Work?

I don’t know how it works yet. I’m in the preliminary stages, which takes a great deal of effort. Once a data set is established, it’s much easier to work off of – but developing a data set is not always easy when it relates to immeasurables like emotional responses to art.

So where to start?

  1. How much did this film earn compared to its cost to make?
  2. How was it received critically?
  3. How was it received by audiences?
  4. Did it win any awards?
  5. How does it hold up? And how does one go about measuring the “cult” appeal of a poorly received film?
  6. Does genre effect a film’s ranking? For example, a drama will always earn more than a horror but a horror can be as categorically good as a drama. A comedy will never get as many awards as a drama, but may be better than many dramas winning awards.
  7. Star Power – does having stars (whether star directors, star actors, star writers, etc) increase a film’s quality or just its revenue? Similarly, does indie-cred count for something and how is it quantified?
  8. Does my personal opinion as the person whose blog you’re visiting count?

I’ll be spending some time this week trying to determine how to use these questions to create data sets allowing us to rank films. In the meantime however, so that you feel comfortable valuing my opinion, I will be putting up some reviews of some films I’ve loved and some that I’ve hated to allow us to better get acquainted.

Similarly, I’d be so appreciative if you’d use my comments section to share your feedback, agreements, disagreements, and answers to any of the above eight questions so that we can get that started in the near future.
